Abuse of prisoners is not an exception; it's an American tradition: "When President Bush announced in his speech Monday night that the U.S. intends to demolish Iraq's notorious Abu Ghraib prison and pay to build a new maximum security facility in Baghdad, I thought, now, there's something that the United States really knows how to do.

We know how to build prisons.

And no wonder. The U.S. has more of its citizens behind bars than any other country"

What Would Dick Think? (WWDT): "On January 17, 1991, Speicher's plane was hit by an air-to-air missile over Iraq's western desert. On the basis of the evidence (e.g. no signs of ejection or parachute, no activation of rescue beacon, fellow pilots saw his plane explode in a ball of flame and blow apart), he was officially declared killed in action.

Speicher remained K.I.A. for ten years, until January 2001, when the secretary of the Navy changed his status to M.I.A. Sen. Pat Roberts (R Kansas), an advocate for regime change in Iraq, was the prime mover behind the change.

On scanty and dubious evidence, Speicher's status went to 'probably survived' in March 2002 to 'missing/captured' on October 11, 2002, the day after Congress authorized military action in Iraq, becoming just the second person in human history to rise from the dead (Praise the Lord). In the 10 years since his disappearance, he had also been promoted twice to the rank of captain."

In correlation with this “state of emergency” the commander of the police forces has ordered a: “SHOOT TO KILL” order, that will pertain to all individuals that the police themselves feel are “threatening” the lives of “world leaders” that will be gathering for the event. This order will only go into effect if the governor is capable of issuing a state of emergency. But, you did hear me right, “SHOOT TO KILL.”"

You may have heard of Weblogs, but chances are wikis haven't hit your radar yet. Both are rapidly evolving examples of what some call social software -- programs that foster a connection to other people and, if they work well, a thriving community. Whereas blogs enable individuals to post a regular chronicle of their thoughts and interests online, wikis are fairly focused Web sites compiled and constantly edited by a dedicated group of people -- all of whom can not only post material to the site but edit it at will."

Boing Boing: Russ Kick on Afghan food drop fiasco: "You know those little packets in vitamin bottles and clothes that are supposed to keep them fresh? Well, many of the little meal packs dropped on Afghanistan contained one of those packets (called a desiccant) to keep the food fresh. Unfortunately, the Afghans aren't familiar with desiccants so they tore them open and ate the powder. Some thought it was medicine, so they noshed it straight. Others figured it was a funky American spice, so they sprinkled it on their beans, rice, or pasta. Lots of Afghans got sick, though we don't know if any deaths occurred. In fact, it's hard to say whether people got sick from chowing down on desiccant or because the food in the packets was usually spoiled."

Richard Lugar (R-IN), to retired generals like William Odom are leveling harsh criticism of the administration's FUBAR mission in Iraq. Odom, the former director of the National Security Agency under Reagan, told Nightline's Ted Koppel last week the U.S. has already lost in Iraq, the only question is 'how high a price we're going to pay.'

On Sunday, retired General Anthony Zinni was just as blunt, telling 60 Minutes' Steve Kroft that the Iraq operation is 'a failure.'"

Where the statute of limitations for rape is only five damn years!
And immigrants can't run for President.
Where Muslims are hunted because
Some suicidal men decided they didn't like
Our arrogant bid for modern imperialism.
This is the Land of the Free ...
You drive by a car whose
Bumper screams
God bless America!
Well, you can scratch out the B
And make it Godless
Because God left this country a long time ago.
The founding fathers made this nation
On a dream and now
Freedom of Speech
Lets Nazis burn crosses, but
Calls police to
Gay pride parades.
We somehow
Can afford war with Iraq
But we can't afford to pay the teachers
Who educate the young who hold the guns
Against the 'Axis of Evil'
Land of the Free ...
This is the land
If you're politically assertive
They call you a traitor and
Damn you to ostracism.
Say good-bye to Johnny Walker Lindh
And his family.
Bye Bye.
American Pie.
So maybe
My ideas about this nation
Don't resolve around perfection
But at least I know
Education is more important
Than money.
Land of the Free . . .
If this was utopia
We'd have to see each other naked
Before we got married
But instead, we see each other naked all the time
Because the government has my social security number
And the name of my dog!
And then we make babies,
But don't worry, they won't be left behind
And they grow up saying
God bless America!
But they don't know who Bush is
Because they never learned the Presidents.
And they will ride the ship Amistad
To our dreamland shores
Bearing the same shackles as us.
I'm here to say that
Generation X
Is pissed and we are taking over,
Ripping down the American illusion of perfection
We are the future generation
I have my qualifications
I know it looks like Angel Soft paper,
But don't worry
It's a diploma
Do I look qualified?
You can take our toilet paper,
But you can't take our Revolution."

Here is Martin Jay Levitt's Confessions of a Union Buster, fifth sentence of page 23:

"The organizing committee is the heart and the soul of a union campaign, for they are the people."

Wow, that is pretty amazing. I didn't expect that this little exercise would basically spearhead what a union was. Not much more to say than that. Wow...

Please Come, Help People Get Their Water Back!!!

Highland Park Human Rights Coalition
Calling all Allies!
Please come to the Municipal Complex
Woodward at California
Monday May 24, 5pm
Peaceful protest

The Highland Park city manager Jan Lazar, appointed by Gov. Engler has vowed to try to over-ride local democratic control of the city of Highland Park by ruling over the mayor and the city council, both of which have stated opposition to the Rothchild-Wright Group (a company that admits it has never managed water systems itself) taking over the water system. There is also a related proposal being considered for Detroit's waste water treatment system by Synagro. We must stop this move to rob the people of control over their city and their water! Many have lost their water, many have lost their homes because they could not pay their water bills! Thousands of households have been shut off in Highland Park and Detroit. This is a human rights emergency!
At 6pm, the Highland Park City Council will meet to consider the RWG contract. Join us!

June 5 Protest in D.C.: "The U.S. war and occupation of Iraq is a disaster for the people there and here, a disaster that the Bush administration wants to escalate. In the first three weeks of April alone, more than 1,000 Iraqis, most of them civilians, and at least 110 U.S. soldiers have been killed. It is not only U.S. troops that are dying but those from Latin America and from other countries in Bush's 'coalition of the willing.' Thousands more have been wounded. The war is costing more than 300 million dollars ($300,000,000) every day, money that is transferred from working people in the U.S. to the pockets of arms manufacturers and corporate war profiteers. It is a war that is destroying an entire country and the lives of the Iraqi people -- already victimized for more than a decade by sanctions."

Sung to the tune of the theme from "The Beverly Hillbillies"

Come and listen to my story 'bout a boy named Bush.
His IQ was zero and his head was up his tush.
He drank like a fish while he drove all about.
But that didn't matter 'cuz his daddy bailed him out.

DUI, that is.
Criminal record.
Cover-up.

Well, the first thing you know little Georgie goes to Yale.
He can't spell his name but they never let him fail.
He spends all his time hangin' out with student folk.
And that's when he learns how to snort a line of coke.

Blow, that is.
White gold.
Nose candy.

Well, the next thing you know there's a war in Vietnam.
Kin folks say, "George, stay at home with Mom."
You let the poor folks get all maimed and scarred.
We'll buy you a spot in the Texas Air Guard.

Cushy, that is.
Country clubs.
Nose candy.

Twenty years later George gets a little bored.
He trades in the booze, says that Jesus is his Lord.
He said, "Now the White House is the place I wanna be."
So he called his daddy's friends and they called the GOP.

Gun owners, that is.
Falwell.
Jesse Helms.

Come November 7, the election ran late.
Kin folks said "Jeb, give the boy your state!"
"Don'tcha let those colored folks get into the polls."
So they put up barricades so they couldn't punch their holes.

Chads, that is.
Duval County.
Miami-Dade.

Before the votes were counted five Supremes stepped in.
They told all the voters "Hey, we want George to win."
"Stop counting votes!" was their solemn invocation.
And that's how George finally got his coronation.

Rigged, that is.
Illegitimate.
No moral authority.

Y'all come vote now.
Ya hear?

While suturing a laceration on the hand of a 70-year-old Texas rancher (whose hand had caught in a gate while working cattle), a doctor and the old man were talking about George W. Bush being in the White House.

The old Texan said, "Well, ya know, Bush is a 'post turtle'." Not knowing what the old man meant, the doctor asked him what a post turtle was. The old man said, "When you're driving down a country road, and you come across a fence post with a turtle balanced on top, that's a post turtle. The old man saw a puzzled look on the doctor's face, so he continued to explain, "You know he didn't get there by himself, he doesn't belong there, he can't get anything done while he's up there, and you just want to help the poor dumb bastard get down.

On May 7th, Condoleezza Rice will be speaking at 1pm at the Michigan
State University convocation. A coalition of student and community groups
are Calling for Mass Demonstrations in response.

Rally Against Rice on May 7th!

(Behind Beaners at 270 W. Grand River)
11:30am-Arrive at the Breslin Center where Rice will be speaking

There will be an alternative graduation with speakers, music and fun
after the demonstration

Reasons to Oppose Condoleeza Rice's visit include:

-Dr. Rice's lack of cooperation with 9-11 investigations.
-Dr. Rice's support for the internationally recognized as illegal, war in
Iraq.
-Dr. Rice's unsupportive stance on Affirmative Action.
-Dr. Rice's and the Bush Administration's position on US immigration laws.
-Dr. Rice's support for the Patriot Act.
-The Bush Administration's treatment of Arab Americans and Muslims.
-Dr. Rice's support of the continued build up of nuclear weapons.
-The conversion of the MSU Convocation ceremony into a forum with a
political agenda.
-The undemocratic process by which Dr. Rice was invited to speak at MSU,
without consultation of the Board of Trustees, the MSU community or the
graduating seniors.
