IBM Italy - some news!

Dear Friends,

Many thanks to all of those who have given us suggestions on how to proceed with the IBM Italy workers’ struggle that had remained unsolved after our historical Protest in Second Life on September 27th. By the time we went through all of the excellent and original ideas you gave us, some developments had taken place….indeed there are some very positive news we had to share with you:

1. Mr Andrea Pontremoli, IBM Italy’s CEO (who personally received all of your petitions by email) has resigned.

It seems our Virtual action had an impact on his role at IBM. IBM Corporation made a complaint to IBM Italy for the way they’ve managed the negotiations with the thousands of employees and how they’ve let it lead to such a harmful image for the company.

2. IBM Italy management have accepted to return to the negotiations’ table and has already met with the Works Council. We expect an agreement will -finally- be signed in the next week or two. IBM workers have now been waiting an entire year for the situation to unblock, so this is really fantastic news.

We would like to think that all of this has a lot to do with the incredible support all of you have given them over the last 6 weeks. Your involvement with the protest in Second Life, your news coverage of the events and your ideas to pursue fighting in “first” and “second life” have really helped tremendously.

You will never be thanked enough.

Again, we’ll keep you informed of the signing of the new agreement for IBM Italy workers!

More than 1’850 -real- people protested behind their computers in over 30
countries to show solidarity with IBM Italy workers.
The protest took place at 7 IBM locations, and in particular at IBM Italia
and the IBM Business Centre in Second Life.
Many Italian IBM workers joined the event after work, from 7pm to 10pm
Rome, Italy time.

It was reported that Second Life was having some technical difficulties,
which is why we believe we could have reached an even higher number of
participants.

IBM did not officially react to our protest so far.
However, they did shut down parts of their Business Centre to visitors (or
really, protesters).
A number of participants managed to crash an IBM staff meeting during the
afternoon - where they were immediately asked to leave and to "protest
outside".
Instead, they demanded to speak to Management. But the staff meeting, which
seemed to be about the new IBM website functionalities, was called to an
end.

The media coverage for this event was impressive.
The news about the protest was covered by blogs, radio and TV stations,
newspapers and podcasts in numerous countries.
Italy's national TV station highlighted the event in the evening news
during 5 minutes, showing screenshots from Second Life and its almost 2’000
protesters.

More information about this historical protest will come in the next days.

Masked gunmen murdered Guatemalan union leader Marco Tulio Ramírez Portela early in the morning of September 23 as he was leaving his home for work. Marco Tulio was secretary of sports and culture of the banana workers union SITRABI, which organizes Del Monte workers. His brother, Noé Antonio Ramírez Portela,is the union general secretary.

Tulio's murder follows a pattern of rising anti-union violence and institutional impunity in Guatemala. In July, the SITRABI headquarters was raided by uniformed soldiers using official vehicles, who demanded information on union officers and members. The union filed a full report with the Public Prosecutor’s Office and the Special Unit for Crimes against Unionists and Journalists.

The IUF has called on the Guatemalan government to immediately undertake a full and open investigation into this latest union assassination. Fight Racism - I had a conversation with a friend the other day about racism (big surprise there!), and we began to get into inadvertent or ingrained racism. That is, the acts of racism that people commit without realizing that they are doing so. It was my contention that most everyone is guilty at different times of some sort of prejudice whether it be on purpose or not. He insisted that this wasn’t so, that he doesn’t have a racist bone in his body...

Unless it was intentional, which it may have been, the title should be the number one way to alienate people of color, defining people as non-white. I expected to see the post say something about it, because it was used all over the place and looks intentional. But no.

Regardless, kudos to Eric Stone for bring up / re-blogging these conversations.

They are all the same people. The land for this venture was transferred to Benton Township and will belong to St. Joseph after Benton Harbor is bled dry paying for the infrastructure.

Ninety (90%) percent of the people live below the poverty level and seventy (70%) percent are unemployed. Almost all of the citizens are Black. Rev. possibly a third program position later this year.

Labor Notes is now accepting applications for two staff positions in
our Detroit office. We are looking for people with experience in or
around the labor movement. A commitment to rank-and-file unionism is
a must.

We are hiring a Conference Organizer and Administrative Director.
Applicants for the conference organizer position should have
experience organizing large conferences or other comparable events.
They should be able to juggle multiple responsibilities, meet
deadlines, manage complicated logistics and schedules, and maintain
ongoing email and phone correspondence with a large number of
conference-goers. Bilingual Spanish/English is a plus. Job duties
will include planning and executing a conference timeline, negotiating
with conference hotel, coordinating workshop and meeting schedules,
handling scholarships and subsidies for conference participants. This
is a one-year position starting June 2007.

Applicants for the administrative director position should
have experience using computers for accounting, databases, and word
processing. We seek someone who is detail-oriented, able to manage
ongoing responsibilities, can troubleshoot, and can relate well to our
subscribers, book-buyers, and supporters. Job duties will include
accounts payable and receivable, payroll and other taxes, handling
customer orders and daily mail, and maintaining files. Ongoing
program work, such as magazine writing or conference organizing, is
also possible depending on experience and availability. This position
is available immediately.

Salary for both positions is $24,000 to $28,000, depending on
experience. Labor Notes offers a generous benefits package. Women

This is a campaign led by active duty members of the military calling for an end to the occupation in Iraq and for our soldiers to be taken care of when they get here.

For all of us who feel only the deepest love and affection for the way computers have enhanced our lives, read on.

At a recent computer expo (COMDEX), Bill Gates reportedly compared the computer industry with the auto industry and stated, "If GM had kept up with technology like the computer industry has, we would all be driving $25.00 cars that got 1,000 miles to the gallon."

In response to Bill's comments, General Motors issued a press release stating:

If GM had developed technology like Microsoft, we would all be driving cars with the following characteristics (and I just love this part):

1. For no reason whatsoever, yo ur car would crash........ Twice a day.

2. Every time they repainted the lines in the road, you would have to buy a new car.

3. Occasionally your car would die on the freeway for no reason. You would have to pull to the side of the road, close all of the windows, shut off the car, restart it, and reopen the windows before you could continue. For some reason you would simply accept this.

4. Occasionally, executing a maneuver such as a left turn would cause your car to shut down and refuse to restart, in which case you would have to reinstall the engine.

5. Macintosh would make a car that was powered by the sun, was reliable, five times as fast and twice as easy to drive - but would run on only five percent of the roads.

6. The oil, water temperature, and alternator warnin g lights would all be replaced by a single "This Car Has Performed An Illegal Operation" warning light.

7. The airbag system would ask "Are you sure?" before deploying.

8. Occasionally, for no reason whatsoever, your car would lock you out and refuse to let you in until you simultaneously lifted the door handle, turned the key and grabbed hold of the radio antenna.

9. Every time a new car was introduced car buyers would have to learn how to drive all over again because none of the controls would operate in the same manner as the old car.

10. You'd have to press the "Start" button to turn the engine off.

Listening to my new favorite radio station, KBOO.FM - the native cultures program was one of the best I have heard. Happy Genocide Day was the theme and there was a wonderful discussion of the "Doctrine of Discovery" that our Supreme Court and really western culture is based on. What happens with the Doctrine of Discovery? It is theft and destruction at the barrel of a gun, or rather a sword back then. Then our laws. A caller blew me away and talked about how the legal system is so prevelant in this culture, but it is all a deception of our objective reality, because of this idea of the Doctrine of Discovery. great stuff.

June 2 – 16, 2007

This study tour will examine the development of labor and employment relations in South Africa as it struggles to redress the legacy of apartheid and to meet the demands for a more democratic workplace and intensifying competition as South Africa is increasingly integrated into the global economy. Topics covered include:

• The history and development of the South African labor movement and its role in overcoming apartheid;

• The impact of globalization and neoliberal economic policies on the workplace and the larger society;

• Organizational and workplace restructuring in response to these changes;

• Managing diversity and equity in the post-apartheid workplace;

• Work and gender issues;

• Occupational and environmental health issues with a particular emphasis on HIV/AIDS;

• Employer labor relations and human resources strategies; and

• Emerging union bargaining and organizing strategies in a global economy.

The itinerary includes meetings in Johannesburg and Durban with union leaders and staff from the Congress of South African Trade Unions and faculty from the Universities of Witwatersrand and Kwazulu-Natal. In Johannesburg, the study tour will visit the Apartheid Museum and tour Soweto. The study tour will also spend two days at the Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Park, one of South Africa’s finest game reserves.

Noncredit Noncredit tuition is $750. Undergraduates may register for LBS 4500.
&Credit: Graduate students may register IR 7550.

Dates: June 2-16, 2007. As well as two pre-departure meetings and one post-return meeting to be announced at a later date.

Cost: $3000-based on double occupancy (single occupancy are an additional $420) Cost includes airfare, travel insurance, lodging with breakfast and in-country transportation. This cost does not include WSU tuition, additional meals and personal expenses. Program fees may change due to unexpected increases in airline surcharges. If this occurs, those fees will be passed on to program participants. Program fees are payable in five installments. Limited financial support is available through the WSU Office of Study Abroad and Global Programs.

Can a good Muslim be a good American?

I sent that question to a friend who worked in Saudi Arabia for 20 years.

The following is his reply:

Theologically - no. Because his allegiance is to Allah, the moon god of Arabia.

Religiously - no. Because no other religion is accepted by his Allah except Islam (Quran, 2:256)

Scripturally - no. Because his allegiance is to the five pillars of Islam and the Quran (Koran).

Geographically - no. Because his allegiance is to Mecca, to which he turns in prayer five times a day.

Socially - no. Because his allegiance to Islam forbids him to make friends with Christians or Jews.

Politically - no. Because he must submit to the mullah (spiritual leaders), who teach annihilation of Israel and Destruction of America, the great Satan.

Domestically - no. Because he is instructed to marry four women and beat and scourge his wife when she disobeys him (Quran 4:34).

Intellectually - no. Because he cannot accept the American Constitution since it is based on Biblical principles and he believes the Bible to be corrupt.

Philosophically - no. Because Islam, Muhammad, and the Quran do not allow freedom of religion and expression. Democracy and Islam cannot co-exist..

Every Muslim government is either dictatorial or autocratic.

Spiritually - no. Because when we declare "one nation under God," the Christian's God is loving and kind, while Allah is NEVER referred to as heavenly father, nor is he ever called love in The Quran's 99 excellent names.

Therefore after much study and deliberation.... perhaps we should be very suspicious of ALL MUSLIMS in this country. They obviously cannot be both "good" Muslims and good Americans. Call it what you wish.... it's still the truth.

If you find yourself intellectually in agreement with the above statements, perhaps you will share this with your friends. The more who understand this, the better it will be for our country and our future.

Pass it on Fellow Americans. The religious war is bigger than we know or understand.

Pass it on everyone, be afraid, very afraid... of idiot relatives...
