Commie Curmudgeon: Good Advice from RedStar 2000: Don't Have Kids!

Commie Curmudgeon is pulling out the best possible idea from RedStar. But here is where Red gets lost:

"RedStar's advice to working class women not to have kids "

I am kind of stunned by the stupidity. I am sure I am not alone in knowing many working class people of loving families, no matter how hard their life is/was. I am equally sure of knowing many middle class/upper class families that are completely fracked.

Wish I could pinpoint the obvious logic flaw here.

May 1st - Defend the Rights of Immigrant Workers

Whereas: the working class knows no borders or races, but exists wherever workers are exploited for the benefit of capital; and

Whereas: all human beings are entitled to the means of obtaining the necessities of life for themselves and their families, regardless of any artificial barriers created by government; and

Whereas: the nature of capitalist economies is to draw workers from all over to the centers of capitalist investment, while at the same time drawing wealth out of less-developed economies, thereby eliminating opportunities to earn a living within such economies; and

Whereas: the recent rise in immigration to the United States of America is directly attributable to this process, as exemplified by the destructive free-trade treaties forced upon Latin America by the United States government, as well as the insatiable lust of North American employers for a dependent, immigrant work-force that can be compelled to labor under sub-minimum wages and deplorable working conditions and used to undermine the working conditions of all workers; and

Whereas: all workers, wherever economic necessity may force them to seek work, are entitled to organize and take concerted, economic action for the defense and aid of their class, for which purpose the Industrial Workers of the World has sought to unite the workers of the world in One Big Union, regardless of nationality or place of origin; and

Whereas: the struggle of immigrant workers is connected and integral to the struggle of all workers for industrial freedom and economic security, which demands the solidarity of all workers, in every industry throughout the world;

Now, therefore, be it RESOLVED,

That the General Executive Board of the Industrial Workers of the World declares its opposition to efforts to prohibit or criminalize the crossing of national borders by workers, and opposes efforts to prohibit the giving of aid and comfort to immigrant workers; and be it further RESOLVED,

That, in order to advance the solidarity of all workers, and to demonstrate to the employing class that an injury to one worker is an injury to all, the General Executive Board of the Industrial Workers of the World hereby endorses the popular call for a general strike and protest in defense of immigrant workers in the United States, and calls upon all Branches and members of the Organization to participate in such a strike and protest, as local circumstances shall permit, on the first day of May 2006, the International Workers' Holiday.

Slant Truth I Believe Her
In 75% to 80% of all sexual assault cases, there is no DNA evidence, Nifong said.

“DNA results can often be helpful, but you know, I’ve been doing this a long time, and for most of the years I’ve been doing this we didn’t have DNA,” he said. “We had to deal with sexual assault cases the good old-fashioned way. Witnesses got on the stand and told what happened to them.”

BlackBox Radio
The idea of the Internet as a public commodity accessible to all citizens may be on its way out. US Telecommunication companies have introduced a series of bills at both the state and federal levels that would restrict Internet access based on fees, remove corporate “build out” obligations that mandate providing service to all customers within an area, and remove local franchise agreements that currently fund local cable stations and local services. These proposals arise as telecom companies are poised to offer video over the Internet which would allow TV to be delivered over DSL phone lines.

According to Michigan Citizen, US Representative Joe Barton of Texas, chairman of the Energy and Commerce Committee’s telecommunications and Internet subcommittee, has introduced a bill that would create a national franchise agreement for cable providers. Under this bill, providers could choose individual neighborhoods in which to provide service while bypassing others. AT&T, for example, has promised its investors that they intend to serve 90% of “high-value” customers but only 5% of what it considers “low-value” customers, namely low-income and rural residents.

Amazon, Yahoo, Google, and other Internet companies have sent a letter to Barton criticizing the bill, saying it would fail to protect the Internet from discrimination and would limit the power of the FCC to oversee fair access. The bill is similar to many state-level bills that have been introduced in Michigan and 20 other states. In Indiana, where a similar measure passed last year, local franchises have been eliminated completely and Public Educational and Government cable access is under State control. Local politicians, including the Detroit City Council, Wayne County Commission, and the Michigan Congressional Black Caucus have passed resolutions denouncing the Michigan bill. Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick has offered to fast-track local franchise negotiations with AT&T, but has not as yet received a response.

"Mark Crispin Miller argues that the outcome of the 2004 election, in many states including Ohio, was manipulated to favor George Bush and the Republican party. He discusses the evidence he has for this charge and talks about the reaction that Sen. John Kerry had when presented with the evidence. Professor Miller also argues that the Republican party has been taken over by religious fundamentalists who see their opponents as evil and whose ultimate goal is to bring about Armageddon. The talk was hosted by the University of Massachusetts - Amherst."

Kathryn Cramer: " . . . the definition of a coward . . ."
"Today's revelation is simple and riveting--the effort to smear Joe Wilson went to the very top of the White House. This was not an operation of rogue political operators. Instead, we have a rogue President. If we can impeach a President for lying about a blow job from an intern, the time has come to impeach a President from giving the American people a line of bullshit about Iraq used to justify a war that has left almost 2400 American soldiers dead. George Bush did not leak to protect America. He leaked to cover his ass. That, my friends, is the definition of a coward."

Our Tomorrow: Harry Taylor speaks truth to the War Criminal
You never stop talking about freedom, and I appreciate that. But while I listen to you talk about freedom, I see you assert your right to tap my telephone, to arrest me and hold me without charges, to try to preclude me from breathing clean air and drinking clean water and eating safe food. If I were a woman, you’d like to restrict my opportunity to make a choice and decision about whether I can abort a pregnancy on my own behalf.

Subject: Another Civil Disobedience Case in Detroit

Please forward indiscriminately.

This morning the case of Ron Dale (age 72) was tried in Detroit on a change of venue from a civil resistance in D.C. in September of 2005. Ron Dale was arrested for temporarily blocking one of the entrances to the Pentagon. He pleaded guilty, was fined $50 and had to pay $25 for the change of venue (from DC to Detroit). After sentencing, he was allowed to read the statement below. The judge was visibly impressed and a bit choked up as the court adjourned. Here is the statement of Ron Dale:

Federal Court 4/5/06

Thank you, Your Honor, for allowing me to explain the reasons why I am standing before you. I did my action of civil resistance at the Pentagon because I was required to do it; it was a matter of obligation, it was a duty, it was a necessity.

The reason I was morally and legally obliged to do what I did stems from two conditions of my life. Everyone in this room shares the first condition and that is that I am a U.S. citizen. A large majority here shares the second condition; namely, I am also a Christian. Either one of these, being a citizen or being a Christian is a justifiable reason for my action at the Pentagon..

FIRST: My being a U.S citizen means that whatever my government does or anytime it acts, it does so in my name.
I am responsible. When the government wages an unprovoked, pre-emptive aggressive, illegal and immoral war on Iraq - condemned by international law and the highest religious authorities - it does so in my name and I am obliged to say: NO, NOT IN MY NAME.

When it sets up a detention facility in Guantanamo - condemned by the whole world I am obliged to say: NO, NOT IN
MY NAME.

When it does torture, when many die in its custody I am obliged to say: NO, NOT IN MY NAME.

When it kidnaps people off the streets in various countries
around the world and furtively transports them to torture facilities at secret locations in lands that allow torture I
am obliged to say: NO, NOT IN MY NAME.

Your Honor, basic morality, International Law, even our own
Constitution since it requires adherence to all ratified treaties, put upon me a most serious obligation to say no to all of this. Treaties the U.S. has signed validate international law that holds each citizen (me as the primary case today) accountable for the crimes committed by the country of that citizen. They place a most serious obligation on me to say: NO, NOT IN MY NAME.

mySociety: Proposals 2006
It's two and a half years since our last call for proposals, which led to us building four projects including PledgeBank.com and WriteToThem.com. At the time we had almost no funding and could only promise to try and raise money to build the projects. That worked, and now we've got a little bit of a surplus (charity language for a profit) left over from our government support.

The time has come to open the call for proposals up again, this time with one difference: we pledge to build the winning project, using a combination of some of the leftover cash and the help of any willing volunteers.

Rachels Tavern: Blog
I am making it my personal mission to get the word out this terrible story. 46 members of the Duke Lacrosse team are taking DNA tests after some of the players were accused of gang raping a woman who they invited to be a dancer at a party. I also don't want people to think abou this story as a gender issue, but as incident that reveals how racism, sexism, and classism intersected to make this young woman particularly vulnerable to a sexual assault. If you read this report from ABC News you will hear very little about race. However, if you this story you get a better idea of what most likely went on. A group of young wealthy White men felt that it was ok to assault this woman, raping her and yelling racial slurs at her. This should be blowing up in the blogosphere folks. This is also one of those "if this had happen to a White woman would we have already heard about it" stories.
