Margaret Guttshall, a long-time Detroit activist and Green candidate for the Wayne State Board of Governors, was critically injured in an auto accident on Sunday. She is currently in a medically induced coma as doctors perform surgery on her. The account from a Kalamazoo paper is reprinted below.

For those of you voting, I strongly urge casting a ballot for her as a sign of solidarity and honoring her long years of social activism.

"CAR/TRUCK CRASH ON I-94 LEAVE WOMAN CRITICALLY INJURED

A 54-year-old Detroit woman was very critically injured when her car collided with a semitrailer on Interstate 94 Friday as she returned from an appearance by Vice President Dick Cheney, police said.

The woman, whose name was not released, was taken to Bronson Methodist Hospital. She had been following a van of acquaintances when the truck changed lanes and struck her Ford Focus around 12:30 p.m.

"She spun off the right side of the road and struck a tree broadside," said Lt. Paul Matyas of the Portage Police Department.

Police said the woman was critically injured when the driver's side of her car crashed into the tree. The truck driver, an Indiana man, drove off into the median. He was not injured.

No other vehicles were involved. Matyas said the woman was alone in the car but following a van with several people in it.

"There was at least two vehicles, one following the other. They were Ralph Nader supporters and they had gone to the (Town Hall event in Kalamazoo put on by the Bush-Cheney campaign). ... They had left there and were on the highway," he said.

It's believed they were headed to a Nader rally.

The vehicles were going west on the interstate when the collision happened just east of the Oakland Drive overpass. Canadian paramedics who happened to be in the area stopped to help the woman before local medics arrived.

Traffic was shut down to one lane for three hours.

Matyas said neither alcohol nor speed were factors and both drivers wore seat belts. The investigation is ongoing, Matyas said."

I know her daughter is here in Ann Arbor. My best wishes to Margaret and her family.
