"in my short life, i have learned the hard way that the most dangerous people in your personal life are the insecure and petty. they don't present themselves as a clear, outright enemy like a rival would do--think of the relationship between gene and finny in the novel, a separate peace. these people may be old school chums, co-workers, siblings, parents, and more dangerously, friends, lovers, and would-be mentors. but the traits that should consistently ring alarm bells are massive insecurity and emotional underhandedness. the have an overwhelming need to emphasize their virtue, because lord knows that's the only they know how to define their existence"
