"Thousands of University of California cooks, janitors and other service workers across the state are preparing for a one-day strike Thursday that they hope will bring urgency and attention to troubled contract negotiations that have dragged on for nine months.

At UC San Diego, about 500 service workers of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees say they plan to strike. Union organizers say they expect a majority of the 7,300 UC workers they represent to walk out at UC's nine campuses and five medical centers.

UC service workers, who have not received a pay increase in two years, are accusing the university of stonewalling."
