David Grenier: Academic bill of rights

"So apparently the "Academic Bill Of Rights" is back in the news again (found via Loaded Mouth), this time in the form of a Florida law that would allow conservative groups to sue professors who they think are too liberal and don't allow "equal time" for dissenting viewpoints. So if a biology professor discusses evolution he can get sued if he doesn't invite the Christian Coalition to come in and give a lecture on Creationism."

Living on Less

"An article in today's The Guardian says that 10.6 million children under five die every year, most from easily preventable causes. Meanwhile, here in the US, the news is plastered with an endless barrage of stories about the plight of a woman who is not conscious of her very existence and hasn't been for years. There are people demonstrating -- demonstrating! -- passionately and with apparent conviction, seemingly unaware that they are simply pawns of the rightwing agenda, for the supposed rights of just one person who cannot even feel, who is already dead, for all purposes. Children who are actually suffering, and who are doing so needlessly since they could be helped, are of no concern. Right-to-lifers apparently can only summon compassion for humans who are not capable of suffering: they have to be either unborn or brain-dead. Dying children? Meh. It's obscene. "

"What sort of danger comes from ignorance? For most people ignorance doesn't seem to carry much of a An Ancient Tree for your Kleenexpenalty. In fact, for most of us, ignorance is indeed bliss. As long as we don't know or care to know what goes on in most of the world's developing nations, we can feel good about buying clothes produced in Bangladesh sweatshops or eating food from an agricultural conglomerate that has monopolized the farming industry of India. Now, I know, I know, it sounds like I am preaching again. But is it not an important issue? Should we not care?

By just taking a glimpse at history, we can see how ignorance on the part of the masses has allowed for evil on a grand scale: the crusades, the inquisitions, witch trials, fascism, fundamentalism, etc. Will corporate globalization join this list?"

Dominion Weblog: Legalize it?

"Maisonneuve has a mediocre article about prostitution up, which has some good discussion at the end.

The ongoing discussion seems to be over what model of legalization is the best. There is the Dutch/general European model, which simply legalizes prostitution and attempts to regulate it, while providing the right for female prostitutes to unionize. And then there's the Swedish model, which makes it legal to be a prostitute, but illegal to profit from the work of prostitutes, and illegal to visit a prostitute."

Vision Circle: America By The Numbers

"The USA is 'No. 1' in nothing but weaponry, consumer spending, debt, and delusion.

No concept lies more firmly embedded in our national character than the notion that the USA is 'No. 1,' 'the greatest.' Our broadcast media are, in essence, continuous advertisements for the brand name 'America Is No. 1.' Any office seeker saying otherwise would be committing political suicide. In fact, anyone saying otherwise will be labeled 'un-American.' We're an 'empire,' ain't we? Sure we are. An empire without a manufacturing base. An empire that must borrow $2 billion a day from its competitors in order to function. Yet the delusion is ineradicable. We're No. 1.

Well...this is the country you really live in:"

In response to my learning of the ways which Michael Jackson used to mess with kids and of the World Cup qualifying match in my recent post brings up some valid points:

Ed via the comments:

"What raving and self-righteous and might I add totally ignorant flipsters who compose such sentences reveal about themselves is nothing less than useless drivel. Alas, it is all to "common" shall we say in these blogs to give voice to such idiocy. It is also the mirror and opposite manifestation of how the right-wing perverts and defiles what the message and power of Jesus really is. Messages like the one above fits in the same vein of reactionary knee-jerk jingoism and exposes the writer for the fop that he or she is.

Whether folks like to admit it or not many of those who do read these blogs or write blogs themselves whether from the left, right , middle, subscribe to Christianity. In many different forms, or at least to a form of spirituality that holds all forms in respect."

"With the guerilla war in Iraq showing no signs of abating, the prospects for successful military disengagement by the United States any time soon are bleak. The political picture is no rosier: the United States will increasingly find itself caught between support of the democratically elected government and resistance to program of implementing strict Islamic law. The United States long ago lost the ability to make policy in Iraq, being reduced to reacting on an ad hoc basis to the initiatives of local forces.

Two years after the U.S. invasion of Iraq, the guerrilla war waxes and wanes but gives no sign of ending soon. Top U.S. military commanders such as Gen. Richard Myers admit that it may go on for a decade."

I mean even China wouldn't have the balls to pass such tyrannically atheist legislation as the headscarf ban, only then to turn around and outlaw a vague parody of a painting far removed from the cannon of Christianity. All while claiming both under the umbrella of 'Secularism'!"

ANARCHISTS ENDORSE WOLFOWITZ FOR WORLD BANK PRESIDENT

Google Groups

"INTER-AMERICAN ANTI-DEVELOPMENT BANK
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
March 17, 2005 | 7:00 pm EST

ANARCHISTS ENDORSE WOLFOWITZ FOR WORLD BANK PRESIDENT

Choice will galvanize opposition to the World Bank

Washington, DC -- Anarchist economists with the Inter-American
Anti-Development Bank today endorsed Paul Wolfowitz as the new president
of the World Bank. At a time when the World Bank is enjoying an improved
image as a so-called poverty reduction organization, Wolfowitz will help
restore the Bank's image as an international purveyor of unrestricted
capitalism and predatory imperialism. For too long the World Bank has
been restrained by wussy neoliberal policies. Under Wolfowitz's tutelage
we can expect to see a pumped-up Neo-World Bank which will rely on state
power instead of 'free markets' to maintain American economic hegemony
around the globe.

Paul Wolfowitz brings an incredible international development resume to
the Bank. In his current stint as Assistant Secretary of Defense,
Wolfowitz led American development efforts in Iraq. Under Wolfowitz's
watch, Iraq moved from a country which had been bombed back to the Stone
Age to a country that has been bombed back to the Bronze Age. Wolfowitz
also led efforts to wean Iraqis from their dependency on an oil-based
economy. Thanks to oil shortages and power blackouts, ordinary Iraqis
are moving towards sustainable lifestyles similar to programs promoted
by the World Bank. Wolfowitz also helped Iraq develop population control
measures via an innovative exchange program with the American
military-industrial complex.

Wolfowitz also brings an internationally known sense of fashion and
style to the Bank at a time when its image has been improving. Unlike
out-of-fashion pop stars such as U2 frontman Bono, Paul Wolfowitz has
pioneered new grooming and fashion techniques that will help him put the
true face on the World Bank's policies.

IAADB executive president, Karen Elliot, said of Wolfowitz's
qualifications, 'Who better to represent a pack of wolves than one of
the top alpha wolves? We welcome Mr. Wolfowitz's nomination and the
future damage that he will inflict on the World Bank.'

He [met] most of the high school students during lunch breaks at school...The Indianapolis Star reported on March 1, 'Nationwide, military recruiters reportedly have been linked to at least a half-dozen sexual assaults during the past few years...''"

I have a lot of pictures of dead Iraqis — everybody does," said Spc. Jack Benson, 22, also stationed near Baqubah. He has collected five videos by other soldiers and is working on his own."

Democracy Now! | Nobel Peace Laureate Wangari Maathai on the Environment, the War in Iraq, Debt and Women's Equality

"Today on this International Women's Day, we spend the hour with Wangari Maathai, the first African woman and first environmentalist to receive the Nobel Peace Prize.

Her life story is a remarkable one. Wangari Maathai grew up in a rural village in Kenya. She excelled at school and eventually won a scholarship to attend university in the United States. After graduating with a degree in biological sciences she went on to earn a master's degree from the University of Pittsburgh. In 1971, she received her PhD from the University of Nairobi, making her the first woman in eastern and central Africa to earn a doctorate.

She then embarked on what would become a life-long campaign against the government-backed forest clearances in Kenya."

t r u t h o u t || Mother of Fallen Soldier Responds to Iraq Withdrawal Debate

"For the last several days, there has been a running debate on this page about how and when the United States should withdraw from Iraq. It began with a post of mine asking FYI forum members to come up with a plan to do this, as everyone appears to be in agreement that leaving Iraq is something that must happen.

The second thread came as a response to an Anti-War.com post that bluntly and appropriately questioned my candlepower on this issue. My reply was an attempt to lay out the wide, varied and multifaceted problems inherent in an immediate withdrawal that cannot be ignored. I sure don't have all the answers on this, and I probably never will, but I did my best to lay out the issues as I understand them.

Yesterday afternoon, I received a letter from Cindy Sheehan, co-founder of Gold Star Families For Peace and mother of Spc. Casey Austin Sheehan, 1st Battalion, 82nd Field Artillery Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division, who was killed in Baghdad on April 4th, 2004. He was 24 years old.

Beyond being an unassailable voice of moral strength and brutally-won wisdom on this matter, Cindy Sheehan brings an absolutely necessary perspective to this conversation. It is the curse of policy and issues analysts everywhere: We dig into the facts and theories and possibilities and potential ramifications of this or that, and sometimes get away from the flesh-and-bone realities of what we are dealing with.

Casey Austin Sheehan was a man, alive and well, and now he is gone because of this war. I am ashamed that I needed to be slapped across the head to remember this, but I am glad for it as well. I needed it, and perhaps some FYI readers needed it, too.

Cindy Sheehan was kind enough to allow me to reprint her letter here" which I have. My response to her words is below the letter"

BELAFONTE: Well, I think those who have the capacity and the courage to make a difference by doing bold things, who refuse to apply that condition, are more often suspect of selling out than they are of standing brave and courageous as others have done.

You know, I didn't refer to him as an Uncle Tom. I said, those who sit in the service of the house and those who sit in the service of those who languish on the plantation. America has many plantations, even today. Not only in America, those plantations sit in many places around the world, where I've seen people suffer. "

When 83% of Workers Want a Union, Should a Company Listen?

That's the question posed by a strike which recently broke out at a Melbourne, Australia-based company called Tenix. After six years of individual contracts and no union, six years which delivered only tiny wage increases, a court-ordered ballot showed that 83% of Tenix workers had decided they wanted union representation. The employer's reaction was to try to force workers to sign individual contracts -- and to refuse to recognize the union. The workers reacted by going out on strike.

We've been asked by the Australian Services Union to send a strong message to the management of Tenix, saying that when 83% of your workers tell you they want a union, you really should respect that choice.

When America Kills.... (ZNet Blog)

" When more than 200,000 people died in a tsunami caused by an Asian earthquake in December, the immediate reaction in the United States was an outpouring of grief and philanthropy, prompted by extensive coverage in the news media.

Two months earlier the reaction in the United States to news of another large-scale human tragedy was much quieter. In late October, a study was published in The Lancet, a prestigious British medical journal, concluding that about 100,000 civilians had been killed in Iraq since it was invaded by a United States-led coalition in March 2003. On the eve of a contentious presidential election—fought in part over U.S. policy on Iraq—many American newspapers and television news programs ignored the study or buried reports about it far from the top headlines"

"Walk out in-game?" Lucy said.

"No," Raymond said. "That wouldn't be very effective. I want them to walk out in Ciudad Juarez and Tijuana. I'll call the press in, we'll make a big deal out of it. We can win -- I know we can."

"So what's the problem?" Anda said.

"The same problem as always. Getting them organised. I thought that the game would make it easier: we've been trying to get these girls organized for years: in the sewing shops, and the toy factories, but they lock the doors and keep us out and the girls go home and their parents won't let us talk to them. But in the game, I thought I'd be able to reach them --"
